How to Use Panchang Mitra
Every screen, every feature — explained step by step.
Getting Started
Set up your profile and location in under a minute
Install and open
Download Panchang Mitra from Google Play. No account, no sign-up. The app works the moment it opens.
Enter your birth details
On first launch you'll see the Onboarding screen. Enter your name, date of birth, time of birth (use the closest estimate if you're unsure), and birthplace. These power the Personal Day Score, Muhurtha personalisation, Kundali chart and Dasha timeline.
Allow location access
Grant location permission so the app can calculate your local sunrise, sunset, and all timing systems accurately. Location is used only for calculations — it is never sent to a server.
Choose your language
Go to Settings → Language and pick from English, Hindi, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu or Malayalam. All Panchanga terms, planet names, nakshatra names and rashi names switch to the chosen language and script instantly.
Birth time unknown?
Enter 12:00 PM as a placeholder. The Panchanga, timing systems, festivals and Muhurtha finder all work without a birth time. Only the Kundali Lagna, house placements and Personal Day Score require an accurate time.
Home Screen
Your complete Vedic day at a glance
Sunrise/Sunset arc
The curved arc at the top shows your local sunrise and sunset times with the current sun position animated along it. It updates in real time so you can always tell how much daylight remains.
5-Limb Panchanga card
Scroll down to the Panchanga section. The five limbs — Tithi, Vara, Nakshatra, Yoga, Karana — are listed with their names and the exact time each one ends (transitions to the next). Tap any limb to open the detail sheet with its meaning and significance.
Inauspicious timings
Rahu Kala, Yamaganda, Gulika Kala and Abhijit Muhurta are displayed below the five limbs. The Kala timeline bar visually marks Rahu Kala as a red band across the day so you can see at a glance whether it is near or has passed.
Personal Day Score
The coloured score tile combines your Tarabalam (how far today's Moon nakshatra is from your birth nakshatra, on a 1–9 cycle) and Chandra Balam (whether the Moon is in a strong position relative to your Lagna). A high score means the day is energetically favourable for important tasks.
AI Daily Insight & Shloka
Below the score is an AI-generated sentence framing the day in Vedic terms — referencing the current Tithi quality, nakshatra theme and planetary dignity. A Sanskrit shloka follows for the morning.
Upcoming Festivals
The next three Hindu festivals are shown with their dates. Tap to go directly to the Calendar screen for the full annual list.
Hora and Choghadiya hero cards
The current planetary hora and current Choghadiya quality are shown as compact hero cards — with the segment name, its quality (Amrit, Shubh, Labh, etc.) and a progress bar. Tap either card to jump to the full Timings screen.
Week strip
The strip of seven days at the top lets you navigate to any day in the week. Tap a day to see its Panchanga. Swipe left/right to move between weeks.
Share today's Panchang
Tap the share icon (top-right on the home screen) to generate a summary card for today's Panchanga that you can send via WhatsApp or other apps.
Five Timing Systems
Kāla · Hora · Choghadiya · Gauri · Lagna
Opening the Timings screen
Tap the clock icon in the bottom nav bar, or tap any Hora/Choghadiya hero card on the home screen. The screen opens on the last tab you used.
Kāla tab
The day from sunrise to next sunrise is divided into 8 equal parts. Each part is labelled with its lord and quality — Abhijit (best), Amrit, Shubha, Labha, Char, Udveg, Rog, Kāla. The current segment is highlighted with a saffron bar and a progress indicator. Rahu Kala always lands in one of these 8 slots depending on the weekday.
Hora tab
24 planetary hours repeat in the Chaldean sequence starting from the planet ruling the weekday. Each hora lasts approximately 60 minutes, though the exact length varies because day-horas are derived from sunrise-to-sunset and night-horas from sunset-to-sunrise. The current hora is highlighted. The remaining time in the current hora and the next hora's planet are shown prominently.
Choghadiya tab
16 segments per day — 8 for daytime, 8 for night — each named with a quality: Amrit (nectar, best for all tasks), Shubh (auspicious, good for new starts), Labh (profit, good for business), Char (movable, good for travel), Kāl (inauspicious), Rog (avoid for health matters), Udveg (restless, avoid). Active segment shown at the top with countdown. Full table shows all 16 with colour-coded quality.
Gauri Panchanga tab
Also called Nalla Neram in Tamil tradition. 16 segments similar to Choghadiya but named differently — Amrit, Sudhai, Yama, Virupu, Somu, Labham, Kanda, Rog, and their night counterparts. Useful for Tamil Panchanga users. Current segment highlighted.
Lagna tab
The rising sign (Ascendant) changes approximately every 2 hours as the earth rotates. The Lagna table shows all 12 rashis and the exact time window each one rises at your location. Your current rising sign is highlighted with a saffron accent, a countdown shows when it changes, and the planetary lord of the current Lagna is displayed.
Best slot for a task?
Cross-check Hora and Choghadiya: look for an Amrit or Shubh Choghadiya that overlaps with the hora of a benefic planet (Jupiter, Venus, Mercury, Moon) for maximum auspiciousness.
Night timings
All five systems extend through the night using the sunset-to-next-sunrise window. If you open the app at 11 PM you'll still see the current night segment correctly.
Muhurtha Finder
Find the ideal date and time for important life events
Open the Muhurtha screen
Tap the calendar-star icon in the bottom nav (labelled Muhurtha). You'll see the 9 event categories on the hub screen.
Select your event type
Choose from: Marriage, Travel, Business Launch, Housewarming, Property Purchase, Vehicle Purchase, New Venture, Surgery, or General (auspicious timing for any occasion).
Set the date range
Pick a start date and end date — typically 1–3 months ahead. The finder scans every day in that window and ranks each day's quality based on the current Tithi, Nakshatra, Vara, Yoga and Karana rules specific to your event type.
Review results
The results list shows each day with a quality colour (green = auspicious, amber = acceptable, grey = avoid). Tap any date to see which timings within that day are best, and why specific Nakshatras or Tithis are favourable or to be avoided for this event.
Birth-star personalisation
The Muhurtha finder reads your Nakshatra from your saved profile and applies Tarabalam (star compatibility) to rank each date relative to your birth star. Dates that are generally auspicious but weak for your specific Nakshatra are flagged differently from universally strong dates.
Advanced Muhurtha
Tap the Advanced button for a deeper analysis — including Lagna at the proposed time, planetary positions during the proposed window, and specific rules (e.g. which houses should be occupied at the time of a house-warming ceremony).
Marriage Muhurtha
For marriage, the finder additionally checks Nadi and Bhakoot compatibility between the two birth charts if you select both profiles. Open Kundali Matching first to confirm compatibility before running the Muhurtha search.
Calendar & Festivals
Monthly Panchang, annual festivals and eclipses
Monthly Panchang view
Tap the Calendar tab (bottom nav). Each day shows its Tithi number and any festival or special day. Days with festivals have a small indicator. Tap any day to see its full Panchanga in a detail sheet.
Festival list
Tap the Festivals button (top-right on the calendar screen) to see all Hindu festivals for the current year. The list includes major national festivals (Diwali, Holi, Navratri, Ram Navami), regional festivals, and Ekadashi dates.
Eclipse calendar
Tap the Eclipses button to see upcoming solar and lunar eclipses. Each entry shows the date, type (total/partial/annular), local visibility (whether the eclipse is visible from your current location), the start, peak and end times in your local timezone, and the duration of totality or maximum coverage.
Navigate months
Swipe left/right on the monthly grid or use the arrow buttons to move between months. The week strip on the home screen also lets you jump directly to any day in the current week.
Kundali (Birth Chart)
Read and navigate your Vedic birth chart
Opening the Kundali screen
Tap the Kundali icon in the bottom nav. Your saved profile's chart loads instantly — no internet required, all calculations run on-device.
Switch chart style
Tap the style toggle to switch between North Indian diamond layout and South Indian square grid. Both styles show the same chart data; the layout preference is purely regional.
Read the planet table
Scroll below the chart to the Planet Table. Each row shows: Sign (Rashi), House number, exact Degrees-Minutes-Seconds, Nakshatra name, Pada (quarter, 1–4), and a retrograde (R) indicator if applicable. Rahu and Ketu are always retrograde by definition.
View Navamsa (D9)
Tap the D9 tab to switch to the Navamsa chart. The Navamsa shows the soul-chart or marriage chart — how each planet's sign placement divides into 9 sub-sections. It's used alongside the D1 for relationship and spiritual analysis.
Vimshottari Dasha timeline
Tap the Dasha tab. The Mahadasha sequence from birth is listed with start and end dates. Tap any Mahadasha period to expand it and see the Antardasha sub-periods within it. The current Mahadasha and Antardasha are highlighted.
Gochara (Transit view)
Tap Gochara to see the current planetary positions overlaid on your natal chart. Each planet shows which house it is currently transiting. Use this to understand how current planetary movements interact with your natal positions.
Switch profiles
Tap the profile icon (top-left) to switch to a different saved birth profile — useful if you've saved charts for family members.
Ayanamsa used
Panchang Mitra uses the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa — the standard used for Vedic (Sidereal) astrology in India. The Swiss Ephemeris (sweph) library provides planetary longitudes for maximum accuracy.
Kundali Matching
8-factor Ashtakoota compatibility analysis
Open Kundali Matching
From the Kundali screen, tap the Matching tab. Alternatively, access it from the hub menu.
Select two profiles
Choose the boy's and girl's profiles from your saved list. If you haven't saved the partner's chart yet, tap the + icon to add their birth details.
Read the Ashtakoota table
The 8 Koota factors are scored: Varna (1 max), Vasya (2), Tara (3), Yoni (4), Graha Maitri (5), Gana (6), Bhakoot (7), Nadi (8). Total out of 36. The industry standard considers 18+ acceptable; 24+ is considered good; 27+ excellent.
Interpret the total score
Tap each Koota row to expand its explanation — what it measures, why it matters, and how this pair's combination scores. The Nadi Koota (8 points) is the most important: if both share the same Nadi (Aadi, Madhya or Antya), the Nadi Dosha flag will appear.
Mangal Dosha check
Below the Ashtakoota table, both charts are checked for Mangal Dosha (Mars in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from Lagna, Moon or Venus). The result shows whether Dosha is present, its severity, and whether it is cancelled (Dosha Parihara) by specific planetary placements.
Score is a guide, not a verdict
A low Ashtakoota score doesn't automatically mean incompatibility — and a high score doesn't guarantee a smooth marriage. Experienced astrologers also examine Navamsa compatibility, Dasha timing and individual chart strength. Use the score as one input, not the final answer.
Notifications & Alerts
Timely reminders without interrupting your day
Grant notification permission
On Android 13+, the app will ask for POST_NOTIFICATIONS permission on first launch. Grant it to enable alerts. You can also go to Settings → Notifications to toggle alerts on or off at any time.
Morning Panchang briefing
Arrives 30 minutes before your local sunrise. The notification shows the Vara, Tithi and Nakshatra for the day and the exact sunrise time — so you start the day with Vedic awareness before opening the app.
Rahu Kala alert
Fires 15 minutes before Rahu Kala begins, giving you time to wrap up any sensitive tasks before the inauspicious period starts.
Abhijit Muhurta alert
Fires at the exact start of Abhijit Muhurta — the most auspicious midday window (~48 minutes). Use it as a daily reminder to pause and act on anything important.
Choose which alerts to receive
Go to Settings → Notifications. Toggle each alert type independently — you might want only the Rahu Kala alert and not the morning briefing, or vice versa.
Alerts need SCHEDULE_EXACT_ALARM
On Android 12+, this special permission is required for the alerts to fire at the precise time. If alerts stop arriving, go to Android Settings → Special App Access → Alarms & Reminders and make sure Panchang Mitra is enabled.
Language & Settings
Personalise the app to your preference
Switch language
Settings → Language. Choose from English, Hindi (हिन्दी), Kannada (ಕನ್ನಡ), Tamil (தமிழ்), Telugu (తెలుగు) or Malayalam (മലയാളം). The change takes effect immediately across the entire app — all Panchanga terms, planet names, nakshatra names and rashi names switch to the chosen script.
Update your birth profile
Settings → My Profile (or tap the profile icon on the home screen). You can update your name, birthdate, birth time or birthplace at any time. The chart, dasha and day score recalculate automatically.
Manage saved profiles
Go to the Kundali hub → Profiles to add, edit or delete saved birth charts. Each profile stores its own birth details, dasha history and matching records. Useful for tracking multiple family members' charts.
Mantra Library
Tap More → Mantras. Browse 5 categories (Deity, Planetary, Healing, Protection, Universal) or use the search bar to find mantras by name, deity or planet. Each mantra includes the Sanskrit text, transliteration and English meaning.
