About Namakarana
How the Naming Syllable Is Chosen
Namakarana is one of the sixteen Vedic Samskaras (sacred rites of passage). The core principle: the Moon's Nakshatra at the exact moment of birth determines the first syllable of the child's name.
Each of the 27 Nakshatras is divided into 4 Padas (quarters). Each Pada carries its own traditional starting syllable. This calculator computes your baby's exact Nakshatra and Pada from their birth details, then shows names beginning with the corresponding syllable.
Birth time matters: the Moon changes Nakshatra roughly once a day, and Pada roughly every 6 hours. A precise birth time gives a more accurate result, especially near a transition.
