Basics of Astrology
Vedic Astrology — known in Sanskrit as Jyotisha, meaning the 'science of light' — is one of the oldest knowledge systems in the world, rooted in the Vedic tradition of ancient India. This module gives you the complete foundation: what astrology is, how the zodiac is structured, and how a birth chart (Kundli) maps the sky at the moment you were born. No prior knowledge needed — everything is explained from first principles.
What You'll Learn
- The philosophical and astronomical basis of Vedic Astrology
- How the 12 zodiac signs are divided and what they represent
- The structure of a birth chart (Kundli) and how to read it
- The difference between Vedic and Western astrology
- How to identify the Lagna (Ascendant) and why it matters more than the Sun sign
What is Vedic Astrology?
Free lesson · Text contentVedic Astrology, or Jyotisha, is a precise observational science that studies the position of celestial bodies at the time of a person's birth and correlates those positions with events and tendencies in human life. The word Jyotisha comes from Sanskrit — 'Jyoti' means light, and 'isha' means lord or master. It is considered one of the six Vedangas, the limbs of the Vedas, making it an integral part of Vedic literature that dates back more than 5,000 years.
Unlike popular Western astrology, which is primarily Sun-sign based, Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac — the actual visible positions of the stars and constellations as seen from Earth. Western astrology shifted to the tropical zodiac around 2,000 years ago, creating a gap of roughly 23 degrees (called the Ayanamsha) between the two systems. This is why a person who is a Virgo by Western reckoning might be a Leo in Vedic astrology — and why Vedic readings often feel more accurate when it comes to predicting concrete life events.
The core premise of Jyotisha is that the universe is a vast, interconnected system, and the planets act as timing indicators and karmic mirrors rather than direct causes of events. The birth chart — called a Kundli or Janma Patrika — is a snapshot of the sky at the exact moment and place of birth. It is divided into 12 houses, each governing a domain of life, and the positions of 9 planets (the Navagrahas) across those houses reveal the karmic blueprint of the individual.
Vedic Astrology encompasses many branches: Natal Astrology (Jataka), Electional Astrology (Muhurta), Mundane Astrology (Medini), Medical Astrology (Ayurjyotisha), Horary Astrology (Prashna), and more. As a student, you will begin with natal astrology — reading individual birth charts — which is the gateway to all other branches. By the end of this module, you will understand exactly why astrologers say the birth chart is a map of your karma, not a prison sentence.
