The Sun (Surya) – Soul and Identity

Free lesson · Text content

In Vedic astrology, the Sun (Surya) represents the atma — the soul or true self. It is the king of the planetary cabinet, ruling over authority, vitality, willpower, the father, and one's relationship with government and hierarchy. The Sun's sign position shows the core identity the soul is trying to express in this lifetime. Its house position shows the arena of life where that expression plays out most visibly — the house where the Sun sits tends to be a place of pride, ambition, and sometimes ego struggles.

The Sun is the natural ruler of Leo (Simha) and is exalted in Aries (Mesha), reaching its highest expression when placed in that sign. It is debilitated in Libra (Tula), where the Sun's direct, individualistic energy struggles with Libra's need for compromise and balance. A strong Sun in the chart gives confidence, leadership ability, good health, and recognition. A weak or afflicted Sun can manifest as poor self-esteem, strained relationships with father figures, problems with authority, or chronic vitality issues.

Physiologically, the Sun rules the heart, eyes, spine, and right side of the body. It governs careers in government service, politics, medicine, administration, and any role that requires public authority or visibility. The Sun's colour is golden-orange, its gemstone is ruby (Manikya), its day is Sunday, its metal is gold, and its direction is East. In the body's energy system, the Sun is associated with the soul's purpose and the father's karma carried into this life.

When reading the Sun's position in a house, apply this principle: the Sun illuminates and dignifies whatever house it occupies, but it also creates some pressure or pride around that house's themes. Sun in the 1st house makes a person charismatic and strong-willed. Sun in the 4th house may create a father who is absent or dominant, but also a person with strong private self-expression. Sun in the 10th house is one of the most powerful career placements in Vedic astrology, giving the native prominence and recognition in their profession.
