Dasha System

The Vimshottari Dasha system is the heartpiece of Vedic predictive astrology — a 120-year planetary timing cycle that tells you which planet is 'in charge' of any given period of your life and what events, themes, and moods that planet will bring. This module walks through every planet's Mahadasha: what to expect career-wise, financially, in relationships, for health, and spiritually — along with favourable sub-periods, challenging sub-periods, and practical remedies. All content uses Aries (Mesha) Lagna as the reference chart to keep the illustrations concrete; your own Dasha effects depend on your Lagna.

Introduction to Vimshottari Dasha

The Vimshottari Dasha is the most widely used timing system in Vedic Astrology. Vimshottari means 120 — the total years in a complete cycle, distributed across nine planets: Sun (6 yrs), Moon (10), Mars (7), Rahu (18), Jupiter (16), Saturn (19), Mercury (17), Ketu (7), Venus (20). The sequence always follows this fixed Vimshottari order; your starting Dasha and the fraction remaining within it are determined by the Nakshatra the Moon occupied at the moment of your birth.

Each Mahadasha (major period) is subdivided into nine Antardashas (sub-periods), one for each planet, again following the Vimshottari sequence beginning from the Mahadasha lord itself. Knowing both the Mahadasha and the current Antardasha gives you a precise two-layer picture of what karma is activating. Further sub-divisions — Pratyantar Dasha and Sookshma Dasha — exist but are consulted only for pinpointing very specific events.

The lessons in this module examine each planet's Mahadasha using Aries Lagna (Mesha Lagna, lagna_num = 1) as the reference chart. Aries Lagna is chosen because it aligns the natural zodiac (Kalpurusha) with the house numbers, making the lordship effects easiest to illustrate. If your own Lagna is different, the planet's house lordship will shift and so will the interpretation — but the general character of each planet's Dasha energy (described in the General Theme section of every lesson) remains valid across all lagnas.
